In a bid to support Volcanoes National Park’s COVID-19 contingency plan and contribute to protecting park staff who have committed their lives to protecting and monitoring the endangered mountain gorillas, The International Gorilla Conservation Programme with support from Partners in Conservation (PIC) has donated decontamination and preventive equipment worth USD 2,885.91. Donated items include disinfectant products like calicium hypochlorite which will be used to decontaminate over 10 patrol posts, protective materials like household gloves, disposable facial masks, infrared thermometers, surgical masks, hand sanitizers, disposable cover all gowns and latex examination gloves plus hygiene and sanitation equipment like waste bin, jerricans among others.
Volcanoes Park Officials recognized IGCP’s support towards the park during these unprecedented times of COVID-19.
“It is not the first time IGCP is providing supplies to protect our staff and the endangered mountain gorillas from contracting COVID-19. With such support, staff is sustained, and the mountain gorillas are kept safe from the pandemic,” said Jean Damascene Hakizimana, Acting Research and Monitoring Warden at Volcanoes National Park.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, IGCP has supported mountain gorilla parks in Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC through providing several essentials like food rations, hygiene and sanitation equipment and field equipment.
